To prepare for Baptism, we ask that parents attend a Baptismal Preparation Class before scheduling a baptism. Classes in English are offered on the second Saturday of the month from 10-11:15 a.m. You do not need to take the class again if you have taken it in the past three years.
Here are the steps for having your child celebrate the Sacrament of Baptism at St. Dominic:
Congratulations on the birth of your child. If this is your first child or if you haven’t taken a baptismal prep class in the past 3 years, please register for the Baptismal Prep Class (English).
Once you have attended the class, please contact Tricia Anderson at [email protected] or 507-645-8816 ext 210 to schedule the baptism.
Once you have scheduled the Baptism, please return a hard copy of the Baptism Registration Form, along with a copy of the child’s birth certificate, to Tricia Anderson at the parish office. This step needs to be completed at least one week before the date of the Baptism in order for the proper paperwork to be ready. These can be emailed to [email protected] or mailed to/dropped off at the Parish Office. (216 Spring Street North)
Become a member of the St. Dominic Parish community. If you are not already a registered member of St. Dominic, please register HERE. We welcome you to your new parish home!
Baptisms can be scheduled during any Mass on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month. Baptisms outside of Mass will be scheduled by appointment. No Baptisms will be held at Mass during Advent or Lent. Please contact Tricia Anderson at 507-645-8816 ext 210 or [email protected] to schedule a Baptism.
A child to be baptized has a sponsor who, together with the parents, presents a child for Baptism. A Godparent–canonically referred to as a ‘sponsor”--serves an important role in modeling the faith for your child and helps the baptized person to fully live their Catholic Christian life.
Each child presented for Baptism must have at least one Godparent. The requirements for Godparents include:
One male Godparent or one female Godparent. If two godparents, one male and one female.)
Designated by the parents.
Should be at least 16 years of age.
Baptized Catholic, has received the Sacraments of Confirmation and Holy Communion, and is living their Catholic faith (by regularly attending Mass and receiving Sacraments).
If married, then married in the Catholic Church (or received the proper dispensation).
Not be the father or the mother of the child being baptized.
Keep in mind the role of Godparent is an honor, but with it comes the responsibility of practicing and encouraging the Catholic faith into which the child is going to be Baptized.
A baptized, active Christian may take a role as a Christian witness in the Baptism. However, this official canonical designation is different from Godparent. At least one of the godparents must meet the guidelines listed above. If in a married relationship, either the Godparents or the parents must be in a Sacramental Marriage.
If there are two Godparents, one must be male and one female.
Anyone is welcome to be honored in your family as an important figure of faith. However, there can only be two official Godparents recorded in the Church Baptismal Record.
A baptism brings your child into the faith of the Church, a part of which is community. Although it is good to include your extended family, and arrangements certainly can be made with permission of your local priest, it is not recommended. We encourage you to use the Baptism of your child to become rooted in the Church community where you are living. Families are parishioners of the local church within whose boundaries they live. Adults and infants should be baptized and participate in the church where they are parishioners. (Canon 857).
Una vez que haya completado la Clase de Preparación Bautismal, puede ir a la Oficina Parroquial para programar el Bautismo.
